When going for an entry level position, which focus of work will be easier to get into? Which field of work pays more?

If you like troubleshooting, configuring, maintaining, upgrading systems, designing networks, working in a data center, then you should focus on network management.

However, it is important to have programming background, even as you pursue a career as a network administrator. Because as a network administrator you will be involved in troubleshooting, configuring network equipment which are critical for software applications running smoothly. To do this well, you need to have a programming background. So, do take as many programming and database classes as you possibly can. Your job opportunities will be areas such as systems administrator, network administrator, database administrator, etc.

Entry level pay is more or less the same. Your pay off in the long term depends on developing expertise through specialization, continuous learning, and hard work.
