computer not picking up network device?
July 8th, 2009 | by management |Dante asked:
i bought a new internal hard drive today, WD, and i installed it and everything went fine, but when i tried to connect to the internet, it wouldnt work so i called my internet provider and they asked me to look up the Network Device and i couldnt find that option under Device Management. They told me to call Compaq (thats the computer i have)…
now, they gave me a bunch of different files to install and nothing worked, so the lady said the network card/lan card might be messed up and i need to buy a new one.
now, if ANYONE knows anything about computers, it would be MUCH MUCH appreciated if you can tell me if thiers a way to fix this without having to buy a new Network/Lan card.
i tried downloading the driver again from thier website, it didnt work…and
i did run the disc that came with my modem… but the internet it running, just my desktop wont pick it up because thier is no Network Device.
Hey patrick… how do i make sure its enabled in the BIOS… when it comes to computer i know some stuff, but not any of this stuff…. if u could explain to me how i would do all that u said it would be helpful.

Sounds like you need to install the network driver, it should be on the disk that came with your motherboard or computer.

so all you did was replace a Hard drive? Run the disc that came with you mobo, and your drivers and your operating system?, have physically looked at old hd and physical jumper on back of drive in same spot? and of course you formatted the drive before you started?Checked all the ribbons plugged fully home?

If its built-in then make sure the On-board LAN is enabled in the bios. If it’s a card then try moving it to a different slot. If nothing still comes up under Network adapters in the Device Manager then its already dead. If there are other devices with yellow question marks then it might be one of them and you just need the drivers.
Keep pressing F10 right when you power it up. Go to the area that deals with peripherals.

network management information
If the Network card doesn’t show up in the Device Manager then either its a driver issue, you bumped the card or it’s toast.
It’s unlikely a driver as it sounds like you already tried that option.
If the network card is physically separate from the motherboard then you probably just bumped it. Take the card out and put it back in and make sure its firmly connected.
If it’s an onboard the motherboard or reseating the card didn’t help it’s likely toast and you need to buy a new one. If you think you think you need to buy a new one you can get a cheap (1 dollar/minute) second opinion, from minutefix.com
